Project Maple Leaf, presented by the Rimbey Lions Club, was back again for another year to teach Grade 1 students all about Canada.

It’s a Canadian-wide project put on by the Lions Clubs.

“It’s presenting Canadian flags to the Grade 1 students and talking about Canada, and we talk a little bit about Lions and we talk about being a good neighbour, being kind, helping people, kind of like what Lions do,” said Michelle Oberhammer, chairperson for the project in Rimbey.

She said they also ask the kids what kinds of things they do to help the community, their parents or their teachers.

“Some of the answers are pretty priceless,” she said with a laugh. “They’re cute.”

They usually go to Bluffton and Rimbey Elementary School. It’s between 75 and 100 Grade 1 students.

“We’ve been doing this for as long as I can remember, and I’ve been a Lion for almost 30 years,” said Oberhammer. They give the students a certificate, a flag, a Canadian flag pin and a poem about a flag. “We visit for about 20 minutes with each classroom and sometimes we sing ‘O Canada.’”
