Diabetes. Sadly, it's become such a common illness affecting many people in the community and around the world. Much can be done to prevent and manage this disease, however what the world wants is a cure. Promising research is being developed right here in Alberta.
Lions International has dedicated diabetes as one of their global focus causes. Locally, the clubs in central Alberta collect can tabs to raise funds for this research. Each year they gather and weigh the tabs each club has collected, with the winning club collecting all.
"Last year the Blindman Valley Lions won this competition, so it is our turn to host the weigh-off. We have decided to make this a public event so all can share in the fun, the food, and hopefully take a little good information about diabetes home with them," said Blindman Valley Lion President Suella Brodie.
On July 27 at Forshee Hall, doors will open at 1:00 p.m. for a family picnic and can tab weigh-off. For $15.00, people will get to enjoy the games and guest speakers, including Caroline Thompson, who will present the latest information from diabetes research being done in Edmonton. There will also be a cash bar and a tasty beef on a bun dinner. People will also witness the famous can tab weigh-off.
The Rimbey Lions Club is also welcome to attend, as they have always participated in the can tab weigh-off.
